Walking involves a direction, walking with an older map involves a layering of time, the past sneaks through holes in our map and appears in the present.

Caminar buscando algo que ya no está, rastros de algo que fue más no de lo que puede ser.

The past is all that we can see.

Behind lies the future that we do not know.

Let us walk towards what could be...

Abstract

Abstract

This lecture-performance constructs a non-chronological narrative through the development of Zurich's city borders. It takes five moments in the city's history, when its borders changed: 1. The Last Glacial Maximum when only the Üetliberg peak was above the ice sheet; 2. the 14th-century walls (1576 map); 3. the 16th-century fortifications (1793 map); 4. the annexation of territories in 1893 (1908 map); 5. the second annexation of 1934 (current borders). The paths given by these maps have served as guides for a series of speculative walks attempting to find traces of the past in the city's current landscape. Taking the perspective of a tourist, approaching the cityscape as if for the first time, the walks have led towards lesser-known parts of the city's history that touch upon issues such as housing, gentrification, collective memory cultural appropriation and integration.

The text employs three languages and a lost sociolect from the Kratzquartier to explore the nuances of translation and of how the qualities of each language can expand the meaning of the words. Through video, sound, projected images, paper casts, rubbings, and found objects unfolding from a cardboard box, an ephemeral installation is slowly constructed, involving layers of shadows, maps, and traces of the paths found in the city.
